Frequently asked Questions

  • Q: What is bentonite and what is it used for?

A: Bentonite is a naturally occurring clay formed from weathered volcanic ash, valued for its unique ability to swell, bind, absorb, and seal. It is used across a wide range of industries including foundry (as a binder for green sand moulds), iron ore pelletizing, oil well drilling, civil engineering (slurry walls and piling), paper manufacturing, animal feed, cat litter, detergent, and edible oil refining. At Star Bentonite Exports, we mine and process the full range of bentonite grades from our captive reserves in Kutch, Gujarat.

  • Q: What are the different types of bentonites?

A: Bentonite is classified by its dominant exchangeable cation. The two main commercial types are sodium bentonite  high-swelling, used in drilling mud, geosynthetic clay liners, foundry binders, and cat litter — and calcium bentonite, which has a lower swelling capacity and is widely used in animal feed, pelletising, and oil refining. Beyond natural types, bentonite can also be acid-activated to produce bleaching earth, used primarily in refining edible and industrial oils.

  • Q: Which grade of bentonite is used for drilling, foundry, and iron ore pelletizing?

A: For oil well drilling, we supply API-grade sodium bentonite STARBENT API 13A Section 9 and Section 11 meeting international drilling fluid specifications. For foundry and metal casting, our STARBOND range provides high-swelling sodium bentonite used as a binding agent in green sand moulding. For iron ore pelletizing, our STARIOP range acts as a binder to convert iron ore fines into pellets for blast furnaces and DRI plants.

  • Q: Does Star Bentonite Exports supply bentonite globally?

A: Yes. Star Bentonite Exports has been exporting premium-grade bentonite for over four decades and currently supplies to more than 30 countries across the Middle East, Far East Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania. Our 32-acre integrated processing complex in Gandhidham is located just 45 km from major ports, enabling cost-effective bulk and packaged shipments worldwide. We also hold the Trading House Certificate from the Government of India.

  • Q: Is Star Bentonite Exports part of a larger group of companies?

A: Yes. Star Bentonite Exports is the flagship company of the Star Group  what began as a single bentonite venture has grown into a group of companies, each focused on a distinct area of mineral expertise. Star Bentonite Exports is the parent company, responsible for mining, processing, and globally exporting premium-grade bentonite.
